Carole J. Symer, Ph.D.
20 + years of experience as a psychologist, teacher, and consultant
Specializing in Neuropsychology, Psychotherapy, and Psychoanalysis
Dr. Symer runs a full-time private practice in Ann Arbor and is available for consultation and evaluations on the East End of Long Island, New York.
From her countless conversations with people in her practice, as well as at New York University where she trained as a psychologist, and has taught graduate students, Dr. Symer has extensive experience working with people with learning and attentional concerns, questions about gender/sexuality, and looking for new ways to balance body and mind while living in a fast-paced world. She was instrumental in establishing a Committee on Ethnicity, Race, Culture, Class and Language (CERCCL) at NYU’s Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis & Psychotherapy where she trained at the post-doctoral level. She served on several research teams, including at a VA hospital and Brookhaven National Laboratory studying schizophrenia, as well as addictions and PTSD. Dr. Symer was on staff at Southampton Hospital for over a dozen years where she trained medical staff in neurodevelopmental problems from dyslexia to dementia.
Even after twenty-plus years of clinical practice, Dr. Symer is continuously grappling with how to best serve each child, each adult, each family who consults with her. Each person with whom she consults teaches her something new, allowing her to bridge the gap between theory and practice, and how to be the kind of empathic human being and therapeutic connection this person needs at this time in life.
Outside the office, in addition to spending time with family and friends, Dr. Symer enjoys studying Mandarin, yoga, cooking inventively, and all things poetic.
